Bioinformatics MSc
If you are interested in learning more about Bioinformatics, please
consider the Birkbeck MSc in Bioinformatics with Systems Biology which
is jointly taught with UCL. [Learn more]
My current teaching commitments are:
- Year 1/2 PAL: I coordinate the Peer Assisted Learning (PAL)
course. This is a peer group assistance scheme whereby Year 2 students
work with Year 1 students to help them and, at the same time, revise
their own Year 1 work.
- Year 1 medics: I co-run two 1-hour tutorial practicals on
antibodies and I used to teach 2 tutorials on pH.
- Year 1 Experimental Biochemistry (BIOC1007): I give 13
tutorials
- Year 2 Molecular Biology (BIOC2001): I give one lecture and
run one practical as an introduction to Bioinformatics and its
application in molecular biology.
- Year 2 General Biochemistry and Further Topics in Biochemistry
(BIOC2002/3):I give one lecture and run a pair of tutorial
practicals on protein structure. I used to teach 4 tutorials on refresher molecular biology,
the immune response, protein structure and function and enzymology and
intracellular protein targetting.
- Year 2 Proteins and Enzymes (BIOC2004): I am deputy
organizer for this module and give a lecture on intra- and
inter-molecular forces in proteins and two lectures on antibodies. I
also give 5 tutorials.
- Year 3 Advanced Molecular Biology (BIOC3004): I run a
Bioinformatics practical on this module.
- Year 3 module (BIOC3010) Bioinformatics: I am deputy organizer
for this module and give a number of lectures and practicals.
- Post-graduate training: I run a 1-day course on
Bioinformatics for new post graduate students and co-organize a 1-day
course in intellectual property in molecular biology. I also give one
lecture on each of two 1-week courses run by the Bloomsbury Centre for
Bioinformatics
- Birkbeck MSc/MRes Bioinformatics,
Biocomputing II: I am
coordinator for this module and give 3 lectures and
practicals.
- Birkbeck MSc/MRes Bioinformatics,
Databases: I
give 2 lectures and 2 practicals.
- Birkbeck MSc/MRes Bioinformatics,
Molecular Structure: I run
5 practicals on this module.
I also taught on the Summer 2004 Exeter Bioinformatics Summer
School and was a guest lecturer on the MSc course at Queen Mary's
University of London, Easter 2005 and Autumn 2006.
At The University of Reading I taught on:
- Part 1 module: Cell Biology and Biochemistry (discussion groups)
- Part 1 module: Biochemistry and Metabolism (Enzyme Kinetics lectures)
- Part 2 module: Microbial Biochemistry
(bioinformatics practical)
- Part 2 module: Molecular Biology (bioinformatics lectures)
- Part 3 module: Advanced Structural Biology
(bioinformatics lectures, practical and mini-project)
- Part 3 module: Practical Molecular Zoology
(bioinformatics practicals)
I coordinated the development of a new Part 2 module on
Structural Biochemistry and planned a new Part 2 module on
Computing for Biology/Bioinformatics and a new Part 3 module on
Bioinformatics before moving to UCL.
